Abstract: This paper provides a review of ideas and research regarding the role of literature in language classes. Firstly, it provides an explanation of positive and negative views toward utilizing literature as a resource for language teaching. Secondly, it sketches out different methodological issues regarding the use of literature. Finally, some empirical studies carried out to examine the role of literature in language instruction are presented.
